2013

4-5 December 2013, Brussels, Belgium
9th SETAC Europe Special Science Symposium: Risk assessment and management in marine systems: State of the art and the challenges ahead

The overall aim of this symposium is to facilitate the knowledge exchange between stakeholders from academia, industry and regulatory bodies, in order to enhance our understanding of the sources, fate and consequences of chemical contaminants and other stressors in the marine environment. This is critical for identifying comprehensive and consistent strategies for marine management.

The symposium will provide an overview of the current knowledge on critical marine stressors such as shipping, fisheries, exploitation of remote areas, climate change, hazardous chemicals, marine litter and plastics, as well as the integrative assessment of multiple-stress situations. The societal and economic impacts and connections will be specifically highlighted and discussed.

Pharmaceutical Products in the Environment: Is there a problem?

The presence, fate and behaviour of human pharmaceuticals in the environment is well documented. This topic is the subject of much attention from scientists as well as policy makers and the general public. However, little is known regarding whether or not their presence constitutes a risk to either wildlife or humans. Answers to this question would help to influence areas of risk assessment, water management and pharmaceutical production as well as regulatory affairs and public perception.
Based on scientific sessions and round table discussions, this International Conference aims to open the debate to a wide audience, allowing discussion of questions such as "is there a problem", and "what are the consequences of PIEs not only in terms of human and wildlife health, but also from a regulatory and financial perspective"?
This event is organised as part of the Pharmas and Cytothreat research projects, funded by the EU under the 7th Framework Programme. They are combined informally as "PharmaCluster".and they address the need to assess the risks of antibiotic and cytostatic drugs released to the environment.
First announcement and call for paper [1401kB].

Deadline for Abstract submission: 30 December 2012.
